The Get Engaged program places young adults ages 18-29 on the City of Seattle’s public boards and commissions. Get Engaged commissioners serve a one-year term starting September each year. Acting in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Council, commissioners help shape policy decisions, make recommendations, and provide citizen participation in city government. Started in 2001, Get Engaged is dedicated to cultivating the next generation of leaders and advocating for the influence of young voices in city affairs.
We identify and support young civic leaders with leadership development and civic engagement opportunities. Get Engaged selects 18 members each year through a competitive process and invests in their growth and leadership. Since 2001, Get Engaged has placed over 150 young people on City of Seattle boards and commissions.
We strengthen Seattle by contributing to a robust local democracy. We advocate for youth voice and young adult participation on public boards and commissions. In doing so, we advance the diversity and innovation of civic decision-making in Seattle.
We build community networks. By leveraging the expertise of current participants and alumni with our partnership between the City of Seattle and the Accelerator YMCA (formerly Metrocenter YMCA), we build young professional networks based on a shared passion for social responsibility and civic participation.
Get Engaged is a partnership program between the City of Seattle and the Accelerator YMCA (formerly Metrocenter YMCA).
